An initiative created by immigrants and students at the MAYE Center called Civic, Organizing, and Government. This course was taught by civil Rights attorney Marc Coleman and Dr. Alex Norman, an emeritus professor from UCLA in Social Welfare. One student, Ms. Vy Sron, the Rosa Parks of Cambodia Town asked “Why don’t we have political power in Long Beach?”. This led to months of research and the galvanized different communities in Long Beach after they learned the City had divided their majority into 4 council districts ( 1, 2, 4, 6). The campaign led to the amendment of the City Charter with the passage of Measure DDD to established the IRC ( Independent Redistricting Commission). This campaigned lasted for 3 years and has successfully united Cambodia Town and starks the election of the first Cambodian American Councilwoman Dr. Suely Saro in the 6th District. Equity for Cambodians are made up of 15 organizations and supported by over 3000 residents that have signed the petition to unite Cambodia Town and surrounding community. https://lbpost.com/news/long-beach-redistricting-commission-final-map
