Dear friends—

Our colleague, mentor, and friend Dr. Alex J. Norman is moving from Long Beach. Dr. Norman has been a lifelong advocate for civil rights, and for the past 20 years has generously given his time, knowledge, and expertise to bring equity and social justice to the many groups and institutions he is a part of in the Long Beach community. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his selfless and relentless commitment.

Dr. Alex J. Norman, D.S.W. started his career as a community organizer, civil rights advocate, and social service administrator prior to his academic career as Director of the UCLA Department of Urban Affairs and later as Professor at the Graduate School of Social Welfare now the Luskin School of Public Affairs. Since his retirement in 1992, he has been an independent Organization Development Consultant, Public Policy Practitioner, and is currently a Citizen Activist. He has served on boards of The Long Beach Community Action Partnership, The Long Beach Community Foundation, and The Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation, where he is a current Trustee. He is co- founder of the Centro Shalom Advanced Organizing Institute, and the Founding Chairman of the Board for The MAYE Center and Director of the MAYE Center of Excellence. Long Beach will surely miss his many contributions.
